Notes

James was shown on his marriage certificate as a bachelor of full age wh o was an iron founder residing in Kingsdown Kent. His father was also ca lled James also an Iron Founder. The witnesses of the marriage were Jame s Longhurst and Martha Ann Enderson. Alice's father on the marriage cert ificate was called William Enderson who was a farmer by profession. It w ould appear that however his real name was William Hill who was a farmer . His housekeeper Jane Enderson bore him two daughters one of who was Al ice. The witness Martha being Alice's sister.
In the 1861 census James and Alice lived at 4 Medway Cottages, Rochester . In the 1871 census there is no sign of James and Alice but their thre e sons were living in John Street (no number) Rochester, with Richard an d Sarah Bartlett and their son. It can only be assumed that as William a nd Arthur were baptized in 1865, that something happened to James and Al ice between 1865 and 1871 that caused the three children to go and liv e with the Bartlett family. It is now known that their Father had died a nd their Mother was ill in Balming Heath Asylum.
On the 1861 James senior was shown as 32 years of age born in Phillack , Cornwall.
Information received from Cornish Family History Society that at his bap tism James Father was shown as an artisan.
