John was in the regular army. He met Theresa whilst stationed at the Bar
racks at Warley, Brentwood Essex. On leaving the army he was employed a
s a Time Study Engineer. He always had to have a hobby in which he alwa
ys needed to be active. He was a good gardener and was a keen member o
f the Brentwood Horticultural Society and held office in the Society. H
e won several medals and certificate for his fruit, vegetables and flowe
rs. He won a Blue Ribbon for his Gladioli which were featured on the fr
ont cover of Amateur Gardening Magazine.
His brother George was bitten by the same bug and also grew Gladioli an
d Dahlias, winning some national prizes. When Dad reached a pinnacle i
n any one field he seemed to need to change and strive for something new
. e.g. Dahlias, on to Gladioli, and when he achieved success there he mo
ved into the area of Racing Pigeons. He had a loft at the bottom of th
e Garden and on a Saturday during the flying season he would be seen pac
ing around, looking skyward for his birds to come home. As soon as the
y landed he would tear off down the garden to clock them in. He won man
y cups and trophies and moved up in his club to become President of th
e Essex Federation of Pigeon Fanciers.
After his death his birds were distributed amongst his friends to be use
d as stock birds. At his funeral the church was absolutely packed with s
tanding room only at the back with all his friends and colleagues.
